Black Earth; Chornozem

Picture
Often working on a small format the drawings have become the foundation of my ongoing response to the war in Ukraine. Created using graphite and watercolour, they merge abstract and organic forms with references to architectural structures, damaged military vehicles, and drone-captured landscapes.

The drawings are exploratory—mapping out ideas, gestures, and visual rhythms that inform my larger paintings. They act as a space to distil and experiment, bringing together fragments of the built environment, decaying materials, and cartographic traces of a landscape altered by conflict.
Through this process, I aim to capture the tension between destruction and resilience, structure and collapse, memory and erasure.
